GASTON HOUSE: A TRANSITIONAL LIVING AND RECOVERY COMMUNITY SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR
Dallas, Texas
2008 – 2010
Gaston House offered a safe, structured environment for up to 25 male residents between 18 and 30 years old. Each had successfully completed a minimum 30-day inpatient treatment program, and most residents were about 20 years old. Additionally, many residents came from very well- to-do families, arriving with lots of arrogance, entitlement, and disrespect. In my two years there, I assumed the role of “House Mother” in a seemingly Sober Frat House! As a counselor, I worked with the residents on:
Sober living tools, relapse prevention plans, independent living skills, job-seeking and placement, educational planning and assistance, daily individual counseling, weekly family counseling (if family was in Dallas,) group counseling three nights a week, monitoring their required daily Twelve-Step program participation, financial planning, and helping to resolve outstanding legal issues, and resident-required random urine drug screening and breathalyzer testing.
